ATP-sensitive K+ channels are well-known for their role in insulin release in the pancreas, but they are also expressed throughout the central nervous system. Since they hyperpolarize a cell short of ATP, they directly couple the neuronal energy status to its excitability. In this project, we will disentangle the cell-specific expression of ATP-sensitive K+ channels in chronically epileptic and in control tissue using experimental epilepsy but also human resected material.
